At Capita Local Government, we firmly believe our people are our strongest asset. We put the very best policies and practices in place to attract, retain and motivate the highest quality employees.

Developing our people

Our ability to deliver excellent services for our customers rests on the skills of our people and we also encourage employees to develop their skills and career. We offer a number of training and development opportunities across a broad range of subjects and formats – from online training - to formal vocational qualifications. It also includes the Capita Managers Academy, providing courses that can lead to Institute of Leadership and Management qualifications.

Managing transitions

Over 70% of our people have transferred to us as part of an outsourcing arrangement or acquisition, so we make sure our employees have a smooth transfer and are integrated within our business. We have tried and tested transition and communication plan to ensure employees receive regular two-way communication, have the opportunity to meet other Capita employees and equipped with the right training and technology to carry out their roles successfully.

Engage accreditation 

We’ve also developed the Engage accreditation to ensure we have the best practices in place to recruit, manage and retain our employees across our local government partnerships. Engage was developed through Investors in People (IiP), a framework that helps companies improve performance and realise objectives through the effective management and development of its people. All of our service delivery sites have to work towards achieving Engage. It is monitored against six key indicators and supporting rationale, which is evaluated by IiP assessors. Accredited sites also undergo a full review every three years to prove the requirements are being met.

Rewarding and recognising our people

We believe firmly in rewarding people appropriately and our pay rates are competitive. We also have local performance schemes, as well as an employee recognition scheme to celebrate individuals who demonstrate commitment to our values.

Open doors

We regularly meet our people in a variety of formal and informal settings, encouraging them to talk freely. We want to hear what they have to say about the company and we want to make sure they understand our ambitions.

Staying safe and healthy

We actively promote the health and wellbeing of our people – over and above what’s required legally. Our people all receive full training and we run regular campaigns to ensure people are aware of the risks that they need to guard against. All this comes together at a senior level in the company – with a group safety, health and environment director tasked with driving the message home.

We work with schools, businesses and community organisations. CSR is an integral part of our approach and expresses our company’s values to the community we serve here in Birmingham.
